Athletes USA: Thomas, what is the key to becoming a successful soccer player?
Thomas Gansauge: “First the player needs to define what success is to them. Some players want to stay healthy and have fun, others want to play college soccer, and some want to break into professional soccer. For the collegiate and pro seeking players they need to have the passion and dedication needed to reach the next level. Put in extra hours outside of training, embrace failure as part of their development, and cultivate a growth mindset.”
Athletes USA: Why do you think Athletes USA is a good fit for your academy and philosophy?
Thomas Gansauge: “Our objective is to provide opportunities for players to reach their potential and become well-rounded soccer players on and off the field. We do this by guiding them in developing responsibility for their performance, teaching the concept of team sport and helping gain life lessons. Athletes USA also takes a holistic approach by working with athletes to identify their potential and guide them through the scholarship process while giving them the chance to seek not only athletic but also academic careers while at university.”
Athletes USA: Thomas, tell us about your soccer projects in the Chicagoland area and the importance of education through sport.
Thomas Gansauge: As the Director of Coaching of Schwaben Athletic Club I have implemented a player-centered curriculum to meet the needs of the player and focus on individual development versus winning trophies. This includes providing continuing education for all of our coaches to keep them informed on the latest soccer knowledge and help them progress in obtaining the next license level. In addition, we have invested in parent education to guide them through youth sport culture and today’s research on parenting an athlete via workshops and team events.”
