NCAA DI Soccer National Championship 2016
The NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer national championship was being disputed last Sunday at the BBVA Compass Stadium during a scoreless game that ended up going into penalties. However, by the end of the match, the Stanford Cardinals won their second consecutive national title.
In the 71st minute, Drew Skundrich, playing for Stanford, took a shot, but Wake Forest’s goalkeeper Andreu Cases Mundet made a save when he caught the ball, laying on his back keeping it from crossing the line. Stanford celebrated a goal and Wake Forest celebrated a save. However, NCAA rules allow a review, which resulted in no goal.
By the end of the game, the scores remained 0-0 and the game went into penalty kicks. By the 5th penalty, Hayden Partain, from Wake Forest, shot low to the right corner, but Stanford’s goalkeeper Andrew Epstein made a game-saving block sending the teams into a sudden death shootout. Sam Werner scored giving the Cardinals the lead, while the Wake Forest team needed a goal to stay alive. However, Epstein had a different plan and when Brad Dunwell attempted to score, he dove to his right to make a save, winning the cup for his team, becoming the first team since Wisconsin in 1995 to win a national championship without a goal against.
Andrew Epstein is a redshirt junior and is the fifth goalkeeper in NCAA history to have a 0.00 goals-against average in a season. His career goals-against average is 0.34 and the NCAA record is 0.39.
It isn’t the first time Coach Jeremy Gunn leads a team to the national championship, he guided Charlotte to the 2011 College Cup.
