A Day in the Life – DI College Soccer
Name: Adria Beso
College: University of Connecticut
My name is Adria Beso and I am a UCONN graduate. The fall of 2014 was my last season playing soccer for UCONN, but as my college career came to an end, my career as a professional player was just beginning.
I’d like to spend a few minutes describing a typical day in the shoes of a student-athlete.
6:30 AM – The alarm rings. I open my eyes, sit up, shave and shower, change into running clothes and make my way to the team gym. The clock reads 06:55 as I arrive to training. My teammates meet me inside and my coaches arrive and then training begins.
8:00 AM – After the gym I make my way back to the dorms to shower and change into my typical uniform: sweatpants and our black Adidas fleece. At 8:30 I make my way to 1 of 7 cafes for morning breakfast.
9:00 AM – After breakfast I walk to campus for a 9 am class. I sit at the front, focus, and learn. I realize the importance of my education and I know why I am here. I try to speak with each professor before or after class to build a bond with them. I want their support and their understanding. The classes go well and they end usually around 12:30.
12:30 PM – It’s lunch time. I can’t stress how many great options for food there are to choose from. My favorite choice is Gordon’s Salad Bar.
1:30 PM – After lunch I head with my teammates to the soccer stadium. I give my best effort, as I want to be the best; I want to achieve, I want to succeed and my teammates want to win. After training I spend some time in the Sports Medicine Centre getting a massage, and then the team meets up with the Sports Psychologist to run through this week’s games.
6:00 PM – I get back to the house, shower, change, and start studying. At around 7:00 my coach and I discuss my calorie intake. I need to gain more power and strength, so a nutritional package is put together for me. At 7.30 it is dinner time. I eat, have a laugh, and spend time with the other athletes.
10:00 PM – I get ready for bed. I set the alarm and look forward for tomorrow. The team and I will meet at the Athletic Department before heading to the airport for our matches in California.
American college sports is one of the best decisions I ever made!
